Fucking speechless.

For two weeks Mercy for Animals conducted a hidden camera investigation at High Line Hatchery, the worlds largest, in Iowa.

From the moment these little babies are hatched, their life becomes a fucking nightmare. Dropped roughly onto a conveyor belt along with hundreds of others chicks piled on top of them, some often being crowded off the belt and falling many feet down to the concrete floor, ignored by the psychotic workers and left to die.

They reach a station soon after where, depending on their gender, are sorted and their fates set; Males are useless in the egg laying service, and grow too slowly to be used for meat, so they are tossed alive into a savage metal grinder, where they become a gelatinous blob of liquefied feathers, bones, organs and all. This thick goop, once deep fried and sprinkled with preservatives, becomes the crucial ingredient of your McChicken Sandwich or 10 piece nuggets.

While the male chicks short lives ended nearly as soon as they had begun, the female chicks life of misery and torment has just started. 

Their beaks are cut off with NO form of anesthetic, and then dumped down a chute with the others. Many chicks break bones while going through this process, and that is a pain that they will live with until they are killed. 

From here they are pumped full of growth hormones, and will spend roughly the next 45 days in a filthy wire cage no larger than the chicken, lose most their feathers due to stress, covered in sores, in such pain and terror that we can only imagine, only to be ripped out of their cages and butchered.

These conditions are standard. This is not an isolated case. This is the largest hatchery in the world, and if anything, the conditions here are as good as it gets in the industry. The smaller the company, the less regulated. I can’t even imagine.
