I dislike when people talk badly about animal shelters - kill or no-kill. As a shelter employee with years of experience in this “industry,” I can say that none of us want to be the one putting the needle into society’s ‘unwanted’ dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. We don’t want to be putting down 4-6 million shelter animals a year in the US, but we do because of idiotic, ignorant people.

I get so sick of people telling me, “Uh, yeah, I got this dog from a breeder a year ago but he won’t stop barking so can you take him to your shelter? I might get another dog from the breeder since the first one didn’t work out.” And then saying, “Oh my god, you’re not going to KILL him are you? You’re so cruel.” Yes, because I’m the one who decided to buy a puppy from a breeder, not have him neutered or microchipped, never train him, dump him in the pound, and then run back to the breeder for a replacement.

I post these messages about once a week but it’s because my shelter, which is fortunately for me, a no-kill shelter, has go to the massive city pound each week and pick dogs to save from euthanasia.

We have to look at a selection of 400 or so dogs, and sign off which ones are going to live/be rescued — the others will be put down. We have to look dogs in the eyes and say, “Yes” or “No” thanks to people irresponsibly breeding and overall not caring for their dogs.

Shelter employees, like me, are not the bad guys here.
